The Walther P38 is a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol that was developed by Walther arms as the service pistol of the Wehrmacht shortly before World War II. It was intended to replace the costly Luger P08, the production of which was scheduled to end in 1942. Peder and Lars carry Walther P38 pistols as their sidearms in the 2011 prequel film The Thing. After ambushing Lars, Derek Jameson obtains the man's weapon and wields it from that point on.
When Edvard-Thing reveals itself and is lying on the floor transforming, Derek repeatedly fires at it. While the bullets are not lethal to the Thing, the impacts do seem to cause considerable discomfort, and the Thing quickly neutralyzes Derek by stabbing him with a tentacle.
